IRA Charitable Rollover
Congress recently voted to extend the IRA charitable rollover provision until December 31, 2011, allowing donors to use IRA funds for a charitable contribution.
So what does this mean to donors considering this option? Simply that now is a great time to transfer wealth to your favorite philanthropy. However, some restrictions apply:
- The donor must be age 70½ or older.
- The cap on annual IRA rollovers is $100,000.
- The contribution must be a direct gift to a charity (no planned gifts).
Prior to enactment of the IRA charitable rollover, individuals who wanted to make charitable contributions of traditional IRA assets could have suffered negative tax consequences. Under the new temporary legislation, eligible donors who direct IRA funds to eligible charities can exclude up to $100,000 per year in IRA gifts from their ordinary taxable income -- a win-win opportunity for both the individual and the charity.
IRA Rollovers are just one way you can make an impact on your favorite charity. If you would like to learn more about how you can help the accessAbilities Foundation, Inc., please contact Karen Struble Myers, Development Division Director, at (724) 832-8272.
